Blohm & Voss Bv 40 'R'
Kit Review
This is a revised reissue of the new-tooled Bv 40 that was produced by Brengun in early 2014.
Inside the box, you will find a single sprue of plastic parts, four resin components, a small etched fret containing no less than 40 parts and a single-piece canopy.
The kit is identical to the standard one releases first, but the unused fuselage halves from that one come into play here as they depict the exhaust under the tail for the rocket motor. The interior is sparse, just like the real thing, with a basic representation of the prone-pilot's position, instrument panel and control levers; there are no belts, nor any decal for the instrument panel. The take-off dolly and hydraulic landing skid are separate parts and you have etched parts for the rudder and elevator linkage, plus the hoops under each wing tip. The aileron linkage under each wing is also in etched brass and you get a set of racks for R4M rockets, with the rockets themselves also separate. The final details include the control linkage and hinges above the wings, the single-piece canopy and the reinforcing plates on the upper fuselage above the front spar.
The kit offers two decal options, both 'what if?', as this 'R' version was never actually built. One is unmarked and had a red band around the aft fuselage, the other is marked as 'White 2' with a yellow band around the aft fuselage. No potential unit allocations are alluded to in the instructions. The decal sheet includes all the unique and national insignia (no swastikas though) and a set of the more prominent stencils, like those for the fuel fillers.
Conclusion
A neat way of adding some extra life to this tooling, and it explains the extra fuselage halves on the sprue! This is a small subject in this scale, and you will have quite a lot of small etched parts to deal with, but the end result should be quite effective and will look good alongside a Me 163B-1a.
