Kit Review

Eduard have already given up a superb MiG-15 and MiG-15bis in 1/72nd scale, well now they are doing the same with this tiny little example in 1/144th. Being a ‘Dual Combo’ there are two complete kits in the box, consisting three sprues of dark grey-coloured parts for each plus a single-piece clear canopy. Surface detail is via fine panel lines and Eduard has steered well clear of trying to do rivets etc., because in this small scale they would soon overpower. The neat little cockpit tub comes complete with ejection seat, you will have to attempt belts, as there are none even as decals, but Aizu fine masking tape will probably do the job. You have a number of optional parts throughout assembly, all clearly identified, so decide which of the colour options you are making right at the start to help identify what parts are needed. Some raised surface detail also has to be removed, again dependant on the version you are building. Other optional parts include two styles of main wheels, different chin guns and two types of drop tanks; the latter are not identified by any of the decal options, so you have to do a bit of checking there or just go for one! The conformal wing tanks are also included, along with two 250lb bombs under each wing for the sixth decal option.
There are seven decal options in the kit, as follows: MiG-15bis, ‘3234. flown by Capt. O. Paldus, 15th Fighter Regiment, Cottbus AB, GDR, August 30th to September 1st 1957 during the 2nd Cultural and Sports Celebrations; MiG-15, ‘No-37’, flown by Lt J. Sramek, 2nd Squadron, 5th Fighter Regiment, Pizen-Line AB, late March 1953; MiG-15, ‘EP-02’, 1st Fighter Division, Ruzyne airport, September 1955; MiG-15bis, ‘3934’, 11th Fighter Regiment, 1957-1958; MiG-15bis, ‘3911’, 9th Fighter Regiment, Bechyne Air Base, 1958-1959; MiG-15bisSB, ‘3137’, 30th Fighter-Bomber Regiment, Hradec-Kralove and Ceske Budejovice Air Bases, 1970s  ; MiG-15bis, flown by Capt. F. Garaja, 6th Fighter-Bomber Regiment, Silac Air Base, 29th August 1964. The decal sheet is nicely printed with perfect register and colour density. Two sets of die-cut self-adhesive masks for the canopy and wheels are included, those for the former being very welcome. Don’t forget that you can already get updates for this kit from Brengun, as they already offer an etched update set (#BRL144105) and will soon release a replacement vac-formed canopy (#BRL144108), plus Eduard themselves do an etched detail set (#14407) as well

Verdict
What a superb little kit, beautifully moulded with all the parts needed and a lot more detail that you would expect in this small scale. This is certainly one for all 1/144th modellers, and the quality of moulding and addition of those masks lift this into the area of being suitable even for the beginner.
Our thanks to Eduard (www.eduard.com) for the review sample.
