Chance-Vought F4U-5 Corsair
Kit Review
HobbyBoss continue their series of Corsairs with the -5 and it’s distinctive chin intakes. In the box you will find one clear and ten grey-coloured sprues, with many parts having come from the previously released ve
rsions. The cockpit interior is nicely detailed, with a decal for the instrument panel but no etched belts for the seat. The engine is multi-part and that includes the complex layout to the exhaust pipes, which are
going to be
fiddly to line-up, Landing flaps, ailerons, elevators and rudder are all separate and the kit has the wing split at the fold. The insets behind the cockpit are a necessity brought about by the various versions made from one basic set of fuselage halves and the cowling in this version comes with separate gills that are only offered in the open position. Having said that the wings are broken at the wing fold, it is probably odd to say that the kit does not show the option to fold them in the instructions. All the ammunition bay and gun access panels are separate in the wing, so you have aligning these to contend with because there is no detail of gun nor bays given inside the wings themselves? The windscreen and main canopy are separate, but again the instructions does not show the option of having the latter in the open position. There are two drop tanks includes, along with the zero-length rails for rockets, but there are no rockets themselves to go on these.

The kit comes with two decal options; BuNo.122007, ‘410’ of VF-14 on CVG-1 and BuNo.121928 of VF-44, CVB-43, USS Coral Sea. Both are Glossy Sea Blue overall with yellow tips to the wings, tailplanes, hub and drop tank tips.
Verdict
HobbyBoss still have a huge series of Corsairs to produce, but this latest one is certainly a nice looking kit in the box and we have high hopes of how it will build. It can certainly be recommended to all with an interest in USN operations as it looks to be a quality product
