Darkstar Metallic paint & Pigments
This manufacturer produced two ranges, the first being the Molten Metals paint series, the other being their range of pigments and we have samples of both here.
Molten Metal
This was originally developed for the wargaming and fantasy modelling market, but these water-based metallic acrylics are suitable for any modelling genre.
Once dry the metal effects are permanent and there is no need for gloss varnish as they remain bright and glossy and will not tarnish over time. Once fully dry (approximately 24 hours) they can be carefully polished to further improve the shine. A primer or acrylic base coat should be applied prior to using Molten Metal and as well as brush application, they can be used with an airbrush by adding just 10% water (they still remain glossy too). Just use distilled or tap water as these paints are not compatible with any alcohol, mineral or cellulose-based thinners. All colours can be intermixed plus you can mix them with other acrylic paints to create a wealth of metallic colours.
Each comes in 17ml plastic bottle with a dropper head under a screw-top cap so they won't dry out and they retail for £3.00.
Darkstar Pigments
These are finely-ground pigments for weathering, which naturally clings to surfaces and crevices without the need for any form of adhesive. Each comes in a 15ml (vol) plastic container with the flip-top lid and they retail for £2.50.
These pigments are also available in the following sets:
Earth Set I (Dark Earth, Earth & Mud)
Earth Set II (Red Earth, Baked Earth & Light Earth)
Rust Set (New Rust, Rust & Light Rust)
Sand Set (Sand, Orange Sand and Light Sand)
All of the Darkstar range is stocked in the UK by The Airbrush Company, so visit their website here (www.airbrushes.com) for more details. For more information on the Darkstar range as a whole, visit their website at www.darkstarmini.co.uk.
