Le Junkers Ju 52: de la Lufthansa a la Luftwaffe
Book Review
This is the latest hard-back title in the Profils d'Avion series from Lela Presse and it looks at the use of the Ju 52 both by Lufthansa (pre-war) and the Luftwaffe (WWII). The title is in French throughout, including photo and profile captions. In all the 176 page title offers over 350 period black and white photographs plus 20 modern colour side profiles. The first 38 pages deal with the early days of the Ju 52 and its use by Lufthansa, then there is a couple of pages about the use of the type by the Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War, then the remainder of the title looks at the use of the type by the Luftwaffe. This coverage is done in chronological order, starting with the campaign against Poland, then moving, Norway and western Europe. The coverage then moved to Yugoslavia and the invasion of Crete, followed by a single page explaining the code markings applied to the type. Operations in the Mediterranean and North Africa are next before the coverage deals with the Eastern Front campaign, which is quite a big section as you would imagine. There is a single page about the mine-clearing MS version, before the coverage looks at the support role the type undertook for the Luftwaffe as an air ambulance etc. The next chapter looks at the final years of the war and this is followed by sections of memorabilia relating to the Ju 52 before the final section looks at post-war use of the type as the AAC-1 Toucan by France. The book is then concluded with a series of colour images of the example preserved at La Ferté-Alais where it was returned to airworthiness for its new owners, EADS and this includes some nice detail structural shots very useful to modellers. With modellers in mid, the last couple of pages list all Ju 52 kits in 1/72nd and 1/48th scale.
Conclusion
An interesting title, which although restricted for some due to the French text throughout, still offers a wealth of information via the photographs with regard to C&M and weathering, all of which are extremely useful to the modeller.
Our thanks to Lela Presse for the review sample, this should be available from specialist outlets in the UK, but if you have any problems visit their website or email contact@avions-bateaux.com
