Book Review
Book Review
This is the first part of their two-part coverage of the Imperial Japanese Naval operations from aircraft carriers during WWII. It comes in a hardback format of 350 pages containing over 500 images. The narrative is French throughout, as are all the photo captions. Coverage is split into three sections as follows:
Part 1
1 - The origins of Japanese Naval aviation
2 - The first tests and developments of aircraft carrier operations
3 - The rise of the carrier fleet within Japanese military thinnking
Part 2 - Development of the doctrine and its use in the war with China (1932-1941)
1 - The development of the three aircraft types used on carriers (fighters, torpedo-bombers, reconnaissance)
2 - Deployment in the Sino-Japanese war
Part 3 - Triumphs in the Pacific
1 - Preparations for war
2. Pearl Harbor
3 - Successful operations, December 1941 - May 1942
These sections are all well illustrated with period black and white images of aircraft, carriers, operational bases etc., along with the occasional modern colour side profile.
The appendices list the aircraft types (1), a look at the Japanese calendar and how this applies to the various types of equipment used (2), a detailed list in date order of the various types used on Japanese carriers (3), organisation, codes and markings of all embarked groups from 1922 to 1944 (4), torpedoes and bombs made for carrier operations (5) and a list comparing Japanese naval ranks with those of other nations. The second section includes some superb detail images of specific types, include interior images of the A5M Claude captured and evaluated in Russia.

Conclusion
A superb book, full of information that will be of great use to modellers. It mixes a great deal of overall images with some superb detail stuff and this all makes the title indispensable for anyone with an interest in this subject. It is therefore highly recommended to all Japanese aviation fans and modellers. Our thanks to Lela Presse for the review sample, this should be available from specialist outlets in the UK, but if you have any problems visit their website www.avions-bateaux.com or email contact@avions-bateaux.com
